Father Noel Alexandre's Literal Commentary on 1 Peter 1:3-9

Translated by Qwen. 1 Pet 1:3–4: The Blessing of Regeneration "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has regenerated us unto a living hope, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, unto an inheritance incorruptible, undefiled, and unfading, reserved in heaven for you." We ought to give immortal thanks to God, to offer Him continually the sacrifice of praise, on account of His infinite goodness toward His elect. It belongs to the Eternal Father to choose the members of His Son, the adopted children who are co-heirs with the Only-Begotten. Let us seek no other reason for this election than mercy, whose greatness cannot be worthily expressed in human words. He who spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all. Us, unworthy sinners, His enemies, deserving of eternal punishments, He has regenerated through Baptism; and, the oldness which we had contracted from Adam in our first birth being abolished, He ...

Peter Lombard's Commentary on Ephesians 5:8-14

For once you were darkness, that is, sinning through ignorance; but now you are light in the Lord. Walk therefore as children of light. For the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, and justice, and truth, proving what is pleasing to God. And do not share in the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather rebuke them.

For the things done by them in secret are shameful even to speak of. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light. For everything that is made manifest is light. Therefore he says: “Awake, you who sleep, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall enlighten you.”

See therefore, brethren, how carefully you ought to walk—not as unwise men but as wise—redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not become foolish, but understand what the will of God is.

For you ought not to be such as you once were, when you were darkness through ignorance and children of the devil, the prince of darkness. But now you are light by discernment in doing good, justified through faith and baptism, and children of God through adoption, who is the true light.

Therefore walk in good works as children of light, living as sons of God in holiness and purity. For this is the fruit of light: to live in all goodness, justice, and truth—to do what is just and to speak what is true.

And do not communicate with the unfruitful works of darkness. Yet do not separate yourselves bodily from evil men in this present time, for you must tolerate the chaff while the threshing is taking place and endure it on the threshing floor. But what you tolerate now will not be in the granary; the winnower will come who will separate the good from the evil. Therefore bodily separation must be preceded by spiritual separation.
