“And the Lord said to Abraham: Go forth from your land, and from your kindred, and from your father’s house, and come into the land which I will show you, and I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you.”
The Lord begins His discourse to Abraham with a very difficult command, in which Abraham’s faith is especially commended — for he immediately left his home and obeyed the command of the One who ordered him.
Abraham is not permitted to remain long in one place, but is continually transferred from place to place, so that we may easily understand that we are pilgrims in this world, and that we have here no lasting city, but seek one to come (cf. Hebrews 13:14).
And when He says, “And in you shall all the families of the earth be blessed,” this means: in the seed that shall arise from you — namely, in Christ — from whom, and in whom, and through whom all are blessed, and without whom no one is blessed.
“They went forth from Haran to go into the land of Canaan,” into which they had previously resolved to come.
