Father Noel Alexandre's Literal Commentary on 1 Peter 1:3-9

Translated by Qwen. 1 Pet 1:3–4: The Blessing of Regeneration "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has regenerated us unto a living hope, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, unto an inheritance incorruptible, undefiled, and unfading, reserved in heaven for you." We ought to give immortal thanks to God, to offer Him continually the sacrifice of praise, on account of His infinite goodness toward His elect. It belongs to the Eternal Father to choose the members of His Son, the adopted children who are co-heirs with the Only-Begotten. Let us seek no other reason for this election than mercy, whose greatness cannot be worthily expressed in human words. He who spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all. Us, unworthy sinners, His enemies, deserving of eternal punishments, He has regenerated through Baptism; and, the oldness which we had contracted from Adam in our first birth being abolished, He ...

Tomasso Mavenda's Commentary on Isaiah 58:7-10

Is 58:7:

VAGOS (WANDERERS) - From Hebrew merudim or from rud or marad, various interpreters render this as: cast out, expelled, exiles, outcasts; properly "rebels," that is, expelled as if they were rebels, or deserters, that is, those who have deserted as if from wealth and strength and fallen away—an elegant Hebraism—or brought down, oppressed, or pitiable. Some render it as "complainers" or "weeping ones"; others make it a substantive: "the afflicted by adversities."

AND DO NOT DESPISE YOUR OWN FLESH - Hebrew: "and do not hide yourself from your own flesh," that is, from your brother or relatives and blood relations, who are to a man as his own flesh. See Nehemiah 5:5.

Is 58:8:

THEN SHALL BREAK FORTH - Hebrew: "shall be torn," "shall be divided," "shall be cut apart," that is, split into various parts, your light shall spread far and wide—that is, your happiness. Just as a man through beneficence divides himself among many, as it were, so his prosperity and happiness shall be most widely scattered.

This is the second part, namely the confirmation of God's promises (as we said in verse 3), hypothetical or conditional: if the people would fully benefit their neighbors (up to verse 13) and worship God (verses 13 and 14).

YOUR LIGHT - That is, your peace and prosperity, glorious and splendid, as in Esther 8:16.

AND YOUR HEALTH - Hebrew aruchah, properly "length," prolongation, longevity, long duration, the extension of soundness by which life is prolonged. For others it means health, cure, healing, medicine. See this word in 2 Chronicles 24:13 and Nehemiah 4:7.

SHALL MORE QUICKLY ARISE - Hebrew: hastily, quickly, immediately it shall sprout, grow up, flourish.

AND YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS SHALL GO BEFORE YOUR FACE - Others render: "and your righteousness shall go before you," that is, Christ our righteousness (Jeremiah 23:6 and 33:15, and 1 Corinthians 1:30). See above, chapter 52, verse 12.

AND THE GLORY OF THE LORD SHALL GATHER YOU - Others render: "the glory of Jehovah shall be your rearguard," as in Numbers 20:25 and above in chapter 52, verse 12.

Is 58:9:

IF YOU TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR MIDST THE CHAIN - Others from Hebrew: "if you take away from your midst the yoke," that is, all servitude and burdens imposed on others. Or secondly: if you remove from your mind the beam by which yokes are fastened together, that is, if you turn away from inhumanity in mind, work, and speech, and abstain from it, as above in verse 6.

AND CEASE TO STRETCH OUT THE FINGER AND TO SPEAK WHAT IS NOT PROFITABLE - Hebrew: "to stretch out, to extend, to point the finger and to speak vanity," that is, if you cease to threaten your neighbor with outstretched and extended finger and to heap reproaches upon him. Or secondly: the stretching out of the finger, that is, the hand toward any work of reproach, or even of the last finger emphatically, and the speaking of vanity. Perhaps "to stretch out the finger" is the same as "to speak with the finger" (Proverbs 6:13), which is a sign of pride or arrogance. Or it could be explained: to stretch out the finger, that is, to harm anyone even with the smallest thing. Hence the Adage "to touch with a finger" in Gilbert Cognatus, Century 2, Adage 182.

Is 58:10:

WHEN YOU POUR OUT YOUR SOUL TO THE HUNGRY - Others: (1) "And if you bring forth" or "and you shall bring forth to the famished your soul," that is, your goodwill or your beneficence—as if you liberally and from the heart give of your goods. (2) "But you shall pour out to the famished your heart," etc., that is, from the heart you shall communicate liberally and cheerfully with his difficulties.

YOUR LIGHT SHALL RISE IN DARKNESS, etc. - Others: "then" or "now your light shall rise in darkness, your gloom as the noonday light," that is, there will be no such great darkness of adversities but that you may enjoy peace and joy in the Lord as if it were light, which the two following verses explain.

AS MIDDAY - Hebrew zohoraim, dual: "as two noons" or "as both noons." See Genesis 43:16.
