Father Noel Alexandre's Literal and Moral Commentary on Romans Chapter 11

Translated by Qwen.  At present this post only contains the literal commentary .   Rom 11:1. "I say then: Has God cast away His people?" The Apostle anticipates an objection. Has God, on account of the unbelief and obstinacy of the Jews foretold by the Prophets, rendered void the promises made to Abraham? Has He utterly rejected, despised, and cast aside His people, so previously beloved? Has He decreed that they should not be partakers in Christ of the promised blessings? By no means! Far be it! This does not follow from what Isaiah foretold and what we now see fulfilled. "For I also am an Israelite, not of proselytes added [to the nation], but of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin, the last and least of all; and yet I have not been cast away by God, but called to the grace of the Gospel and made a partaker of the promises, nay, even chosen by Christ for the apostleship and the preaching of the Gospel." Rom 11:2. "God has not cast away His people...

Father Noel Alexandre's Moral Commentary on John 4:5-42

Translated by Claude MORAL COMMENTARY Jn 4:6 "Jesus therefore, wearied from the journey, sat thus beside the spring." God is wearied for the sake of his creature's salvation. He grows weary so that he may procure for us eternal rest; he grows weary on the road so that he may seek us out as wanderers and lost. "For you, Jesus grew weary from the journey." Let us adore Jesus, both strong and weak: strong, because "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God — this was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him" — and made without labor; weak, because "the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us." The strength of Christ created you; the weakness of Christ re-created you. The strength of Christ caused what was not to exist; the weakness of Christ caused what existed not to perish. He founded us by his strength; he sought us out by his weakness. "Wearied from the journey" — his j...

Father Noel Alexandre's Literal Commentary on John 4:5-42

LITERAL COMMENTARY Jn 4:5 He came therefore to a city of Samaria called Sichar — or Sichem — near the plot of land that Jacob gave to his son Joseph when dying, as is recorded in Genesis 48:22: "I give to you one portion beyond your brothers, which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and my bow." The city of Sichem, moreover, the Jews mockingly called Sichar — meaning "city of the drunkard" — because through evil schism they were, as it were, intoxicated and out of their minds. Hence the Ephraimites or Samaritans are called "drunkards of Ephraim" by Isaiah. Jn 4:6 Now there was there — namely on that plot of land — Jacob's spring or well, which tradition held had been dug by the patriarch Jacob, or at least used by Jacob and his family. Jesus therefore, wearied from the journey he had made on foot, sat thus beside the spring — that is, next to it, not in a chair or comfortable place, but on the ground, in the manner and posture of ...

St Albert the Great's Commentary on John 4:5-15, 19b-26, 39a, 40-42

Translated by Claude Jn 4:5 He came therefore to a city of Samaria called Sichar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Here is touched upon the second element — namely the description of the place of teaching by the name of the city of Samaria. He came therefore to a city of Samaria called Sichar. As Jerome says, "Sichar" is a corrupt reading according to the Septuagint; the true name is "Shechem," where, as is told in Genesis 34:1 and following, the sons of Jacob slew the Shechemites in revenge for the rape of their sister. "Sichar" is interpreted as "enclosure" — because the Shechemites were enclosed there, and there also the incest of the Samaritan woman was unlocked by the Lord by the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. The city therefore received its name from this omen. And this is what is meant by: He came therefore in passing to a city of Samaria called Sichar. Ezekiel 7:23: "Make a chain, for the land is ...
